Timeline of the Club’s past activities and accomplishments

 

1943 - 1983

- Grandmaster Ketr teaches Muay Chaiya to Kru Thonglor Yalae (Kru Thong)

- After Ajarn Ketr’s death, Kru Thong continues the tradition of teaching Muay Thai at his famed boxing camp “Chaiyarat”, albeit in a customized style to suit the demands of the growing sport of Muay Thai

- Kru Praeng, along with fellow Ramkamhaeng University’s Ancient Weapons Club members, meets with Kru Thong to seek apprenticeship and begin formal Muay Thai education. Due to their extensive background of ancient style weapons training (similar basics to Ancient Muay Thai), Kru Thong decides to pass on the knowledge of Muay Chaiya. The group of students is the first fortunate enough to study Muay Chaiya as was taught by Ajarn Ketr through Kru Thong.

- Kru Thong together with his group of Ramkamhaeng students establish the Muay Chaiya Conservation Club as a means to spread the knowledge of Muay Chaiya to the general public.

- Kru Thong starts writing articles and newspaper columns under the pen name ‘Thong Muay Thai” and “Thong Chaiyarat”

- Kru Thong leads his group of students to perform Muay Chaiya demonstration on December 5 (King’s Birthday ceremony) at Sanam Luang Royal Ceremony.

 

1984 – 1985 - Upon Kru Praeng’s graduation from University, he joins Kru Thong as an official at the Department of Land and Construction where he also begins his role as a formal Muay Chaiya Assistant Teacher to the general public.

- Kru Thong, with Kru Praeng’s assistance, re-organizes the structure of the original Muay Chaiya curriculum to improve the learning process for the general public.

- Mr. Tum (Kru Tum), formerly from the Muay Chaiya Conservation Club, graduates from Chulalongkorn University and invites Kru Thong as a special guest teacher to teach Muay Chaiya at the Chula University Martial Arts Club.

- Kru Thong is widely recognized as a Master of Ancient Muay Thai and as the successor to Grandmaster Ketr. A large number of people seek to learn from him.

- The three brothers - Mr. Wallapis, Mr. Krisada (Kru Lek), Mr. Kiranand, and their friend, Mr. Chatchai visit and introduce themselves to Kru Thong. They were fortunate to have studied under Ajarn Ketr in the very last period of his life.

 

1986 – 1987

- Kru Thong, Kru Praeng, and Kru Laem demonstrate Muay Chaiya in the video titled “Muay Thai: The Superb Art of Fighting” which was part of a Government-sponsored projectto promote Thailand’s tourism industry.

- Due to the overwhelming number of new students, Kru Thong seeks additional locations to serve as a branch school. Mr. Kiranand offers his residence (also a music school) for use.

- Mr. Krisada (Kru Lek), given his talent in art, offers and re-designs the club logo. The new logo is approved by the committee and put in use.

- The Magazine “Sarakadee” (Thai version of National Geographic features cover story on Muay Thai Chaiya with pictorial demonstrations by Kru Praeng and Kru Laem.

- Dr. Uay provides sponsorship funding for the Club to publish a book introducing Muay Chaiya to the general public. Unfortunately, after Dr. Uay passed away and the project was put to a halt. Today, Kru Thong, Kru Praeng, and Kru Laem’s writings and photos remain unpublished.

- Sawasdee, the Thai Airways in-flight magazine, features the story of Muay Chaiya in its Vol. 17 Oct 1998 edition

1989 - 1993

- Kru Thong is invited by the Thai National Encyclopedia to display the various Look Mai of Muay Thai. As Kru Praeng and Kru Laem were occupied, Mr. Saknarong was kind enough to stand in.

- Renowned Master Artist Chakrapand Posayakrit invites Kru Thong, Kru Praeng, and Kru Laem to demonstrate Muay Chaiya as part of the royal show to HRH Princess Chao Fah Chulaporn Warailuk

- Khun Chakrapand and Khun Wallapis introduce the owner of the famous Muay Thai Camp Ploenchit to Kru Thong. The owner hopes to revive the beauty of Muay Thai and sends boxers in his camp to train with Kru Thong at his house.

- Kru Thong takes his students on a trip down south of Thailand to the city of Chaiya, and pays respect to the remains of Poh Tan Ma (the warrior-turned-monk who brought Ancient Muay Thai to Chaiya dueing the reign of King Rama 5th)

 

1994 – 1996 - Due to health-related problems, Kru Thong stops his visits to the two Universities as special teacher

- Kru Thong is invited First Muay Thai Amateur Conference

- Kru Thong is feels a sudden pain in his stomach and is later diagnosed with appendicitis. Luckily, Mr. Krisada was able to get Kru Thong to the hospital in time. Our Conservation Club express a big thank you to Mr. Krisada.

- Despite his ill-health, Kru Thong leads his group of students to pay their annual respects to the remains of Poh Tan Mah at the city of Chaiya.

- Kru Thong participates in the Second Muay Thai Amateur Conference and as guest judge for the Wai Kru Ceremony Competition

- 19 September 1996, Kru Thong passes away due to Lung Cancer at Bangkok Hospital

1997 – 1999 - After Kru Thong’s death, the activities of the Club slowed down, but the teaching of Muay Chaiya to the general public continued

- At Mr. Krisada’s invitation, Kru Praeng and his students demonstrate Muay Chaiya as part of the show at Bann Chang Thai (joint with Mr. Krisada’s Thai puppet show)

- Mr. Krisada invites Kru Praeng to open up a school branch at his residence, Baan Chang Thai

- Mr. Krisada and Kru Praeng, through Mr. Chatchai’s introduction, teach Muay Chaiya at the YMCA Bangkok

- Mr. Chatchai invites Kru Praeng to set up a Krabi Krabong (Ancient Thai Sword) school at his residence. But due to Kru Praeng’s lack of time, Kru Praeng instead introduces Kru Manot, a senior from his University Days well-versed in ancient sword. Mr. Chathai and Kru Manot together set up with Arthamat School of Ancient Sword Fighting.

- Kru Praeng is invited by the popular TV show , Saab Khoon Song, to demonstrate Muay Chaiya. The response was overwhelming.

 

2000 – 2002
- Kru Praeng accepts position as PE teacher for western boxing at Siam University and during his free time continues to teach Muay Chaiya at Ramkamhaeng University’s Muay Chaiya Club.

- Kru Praeng, Kru Tum, and Kru Laem visit and pay respect to the remains of Poh Tan Mah at the city of Chaiya, continuing the tradition Kru Thong had started.

- National Geographic contacts Kru Praeng to feature its story on Muay Thai; due to distribution rights reasons, Kru Praeng declines the invitation.

- October 5 2002, Kru Praeng and Kru Laem open their main school at section in Lumpini Park

- At one of his students introduction, Kru Praeng meets with Mrs. Srithorn, Ajarn Ketr’s daughter, to discuss about the future of Muay Chaiya

 

2003 – 2004

- Mrs. Srithorn, Kru Praeng, and a close group of associates visit the city of Chaiya to pay respects to the remains of Poh Tan Mah

- Ruam Rudee Internation School invites Kru Praeng to open a class on Muay Chaiya for its teachers and students

- The Indies School of Art invites Kru Praeng to open a class on Muay Chaiya for its students

- M.R. Adisoradech (of royal family), one of the last few students of Ajarn Ketr (6 months prior to his death), introduces himself and requests to test Kru Praeng’s Muay Chaiya skills for 3 days. On the last day, M.R. Adisoradech seeks to be Kru Praeng’s formal student and is accepted.

- The Muay Chaiya Conservation Club is registered and Kru Praeng serves as its first President and Chairman.

- The Ministry of Sports and Tourism invite the Club to demonstrate Muay Chaiya as part of the revival program for Ancient Muay Thai

- The Club, at the invitation of one of Kru Thong’s students, opens up another school branch at Sukhumvit Soi 71

- The Club is invited to demonstrate Muay Chaiya, along with other Martial Arts, as part of the show for the 11th APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Conference)

- The Thai Royal Navy requests the club to demonstrate Muay Chaiya at the Navy Base in the province of Samutprakarn. Students from the Royal Navy Colleg currently studying Muay Chaiya at the Lumpini Park main school.

- April 9, 2004 – the Club together with Siam Yuth Gym organize the Teacher’s ceremony for Kru Praeng. Students from all across come to pay respect.

- September 11, 2004 – Muay Chaiya website is launched
